One of the biggest issues the Total War series (Rome, Medieval, Napoleon, Empire) has had with their games is the artificial intelligence of your computer opponents. Basically, you could beat your opponent on any difficulty level handily without much in game experience.
I have to say, so far, Shogun 2 Total War has really done a good job with this. I've played a half dozen battles and never won (I was winning most of my battles in other series), because the AI is no longer predictable.
I've had the AI camp a spot on the battlefield and fight cohesively against my charging forces (never happens in custom battles for other series). I've also seen the AI maneuver up onto high ground to gain the upper hand.
The days of mass charges seem to be done as well. In Empire total war, if you get too close to the enemy AI on pretty much any difficulty level they will banzai charge you.
The introduction of some thinking about the enemy, is a pretty nice change already. Looking forward to the rest of the game.
