Codemasters Plays Politics With Operation Flash Point: Red River

Let me first start off by saying that I am a huge fan of the much maligned Flashpoint game series. As a 360 user, I never had the bug issues or DLC issues that PS3 players had. I found the Dragon Rising game incredibly complex but I appreciated the challenge. I spent hours playing that game trying to get through missions only to be shot up and forced to start over again. I like that the game is realistic and isn't a version of Halo with gravity (Call of Duty series).

Let me also say, that a few hours into playing OF: Red River (the latest installment of the game), I think the gameplay is even better. Codemasters has simplified the fireteam control menu and given players a way to get back into the game from the last saved checkpoint. A HUGE improvement. They also improved the graphics. Where OF: Dragon Rising was grey and green, OF: Red River is brilliantly colorful with vast rolling landscapes that open up with color.

So with improvements made with gameplay, it is really annoying to have to get a sour candy in the game intro.

Note to Codemasters: You did a nice job introducing the region's history, including the US's involvement with Reagan, George Bush 41 and the rise of Osama Bin Laden. But then you skipped to 9/11 and didn't mention Bill Clinton's series of missteps handling OBL. C'mon now. This is 101 Al Qaeda history: WTC '93, USS Stark, Nairobi and Tanzania bombings.

So what we are left with is two Republican Presidents provoking OBL into attacking us and the resulting shit storm of war in Afghanistan, Iraq and for this game's purposes Tajikistan and no mention of the 8 years of Democrat Bill Clinton ignoring the rise of Al Qaeda. This is just a game, but when you throw in real history (Reagan, Bush, OBL, 9/11) to build the storyline, the least you can do is get it right...
