Interested in how to run a massive national campaign in 50 states? Follow the online Twitter network of Barack Obama. Each state has their own account for local volunteers to follow, and all of them have been growing steadily. Obama's grassroots leaders in the campaign hq, are using Twitter to encourage and guide the Twitter teams of volunteers in each state with tweets like this one:
@jeremy bird: @OFA_OH @OFA_MI @OFA_PA @OFA_NM dropping voter registration best practices on #1pmcall. Wise, wise organizers.
I am fairly familiar with this kind of organization because we built Team Huck this way in anticipation of a 2012 run. We had 50 state accounts also but their effectiveness varied. It wasn't until the summer of 2010 when we had a tight knit team of 7 national volunteer coordinators take over the accounts that our messaging and effectiveness improved.
What's different? The early buy in by Obama campaign operatives is the stitching that tightly weaves this social media universe together. We didn't have the time or discipline to do it. Kudos to them for keeping it together and organized so far.
